IISRS and China

The International Institute for Suburban and Regional Studies has developed and maintained active and mutually-beneficial relations with research and education institutions in the People's Republic of China since 1983. Among the activities have been joint conferences, workshops, seminars, short-term teaching, research, publications, and various consulting projects.

Highlights:

1983
Hosting a delegation from China at the American Sociological Association (ASA) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas and a conference in Baltimore, Maryland

1984
Dr. Borowsky's lecture tour to China (16 universities and 9 state institutes for social research)

1984 and 1985
Together with International Friends of Music Association, sending several delegations of American scholars, business people, and artists to China

1986 through 1989
Study, “Youth in China and the USA: A Comparative Interdisciplinary Study of Youth Aspirations and Socio-Economic Reality” with the Chinese Social Science Academy in Tianjin, Nankai University, and Tianjin University

Conference in Beijing and Tianjin: “Youth in China and the USA: A Comparative Interdisciplinary Study of Youth Aspirations and Socio-Economic Reality”

1987
Sponsored a 7-person academic delegation from Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai to visit and lecture in the USA (Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, New Haven, Boston)

1990
Together with the University of Maryland/Towson, hosted 5 Chinese scholars for a visit focusing on environmental protection and quality of life

1991
Hosted the President of the Tianjin Social Science Academy (Prof. Wang Hui)

1992
Hosted 40 Chinese scholars and public officials at an international conference in Baltimore (“Suburban Development and Quality of Life in the USA and China”) and several symposiums and workshops in Maryland, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, and New York, New Haven, Boston,  Providence, Albany, Minneapolis, and Chicago)

1995
Delegation from the IISRS visited China (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Xian, Chengdu, Laoning, Nanjing)

1999
Sponsored Mr. Huifan Dong (Tianjin Federation of Social Sciences) to study English and American culture in the USA

2003 through 2006
 Sponsored  four students from China to study in the USA

2007
Lectures and workshops at universities in Beijing and Tianjin on "Suburban Development and Quality of Life in the USA" (Dr. Borowsky). Visit sponsored by the Tianjin Federation of Social Sciences (umbrella of 280 academic and cultural organizations).

2008
Lectures and workshops at universities in Beijing and Tianjin on "Globalization: Challenges to the World and to China" (Dr. Borowsky). Visit sponsored by the Tianjin Federation of Social Sciences (umbrella of 280 academic and cultural organizations).

Visit of a business delegation under the leadership of Ms. Huah Li from China to USA to foster mutual business, culture, and academic relations.
